Dr. Steve Pelton at Hearthstone Animal Clinic, smiling, with a scruffy puppy on the exam table

Hi, I'm Dr. P.

I've been a vet since 2000, I practice in Cypress, Texas, and I see about ten itchy dogs a day. Most of their owners have already lost a few nights of sleep and read a pile of conflicting advice before they get to me.

So I built the site I wish they'd found first. It's what I'd tell you in the exam room: what's safe tonight, what's probably going on, and which medicines are worth the money. When your dog needs a vet, it'll say so.

How allergies actually work

A few minutes on what's going on inside your dog's skin. It makes everything else on this site click.

Give your dog an itch diary.

You'll get your dog's own forecast, one-tap check-ins on how the itch is going, and a streak for every itch-free stretch. The good days earn awards. It's a free account with no password: I'll email you a button that signs you in, and the diary follows you from your phone to your computer.

Questions I get every day

The short answers, in plain words. More questions and answers.

What is the Itch Forecast?

It's a free daily dog allergy forecast for any US ZIP code. Itch Risk is a 0 to 10 score that starts from the highest of the tree, grass and weed pollen counts, then adjusts for wind, rain, humidity and heat. It describes the conditions outside, not any one dog. On a high day, wiping your dog's paws and belly after walks is cheap and takes about 30 seconds.

What's the pollen count for dogs today?

Type your ZIP code into the Itch Forecast on itchydog.vet to see today's tree, grass and weed pollen where you live, plus mold risk, rolled into one Itch Risk score from 0 to 10. The pollen counts use Google's Universal Pollen Index, which runs from 0 to 5. Dogs don't get a pollen count of their own, but in allergic dogs the paws and face are where pollen slips in through the skin.

When is dog allergy season in Houston?

Around Houston, allergy season runs most of the year. Tree pollen starts in late winter, grasses carry on through much of the warm season, and fall belongs to weed pollen and mold spores, often until the first real cold front. Summer heat and humidity bring yeast and ear infections. Our short, mild winters barely give a break, and fleas don't take winter off in Texas, so I recommend flea control all year.

Environment: managed, not cured

Can mold make my dog itchy?

Yes, mold can make an allergic dog itchy. Mold spores are one of the environmental allergens behind atopic dermatitis, along with pollen and dust mites, and mold loves damp air. The Itch Forecast rates mold risk high when it rained the day before and the humidity stays above 75%, and moderate after rain or when the humidity is above 65%. Many allergic dogs react to more than one of these, which is one reason the itch can spread across more of the calendar.

Who is behind itchydog.vet?

I'm Dr. Steve Pelton, DVM, a small-animal vet and the owner of Hearthstone Animal Clinic in Cypress, Texas, and I see itchy, allergic dogs every day. I built itchydog.vet to say what I'd tell you in the exam room. Every dose, statistic and medical claim here is signed off by me before it counts as reviewed. It's general education, not veterinary advice: if your dog is miserable, see your vet.

Did Dr. Pelton write a book about itchy dogs?

Yes, my book The Itchy Dog: Why Is My Dog So Itchy? A Vet's Real Answers on What Actually Works is out now on Kindle. It walks through itchy dogs the way I would in the exam room: what's happening, how we find the cause, what the treatments really cost and really do, and which internet advice you can stop paying for. The explainers on itchydog.vet, like the itch ladder and the flea iceberg, are pages from it.

Why Is My Dog So Itchy? A Vet's Real Answers on What Actually Works

It's the book I wish every itchy dog's family could read before their first allergy visit. Most of this site started in it, and the book has room for the whole story: what's driving the itch, what each treatment really does, and what it costs.

Get it on Amazon (Kindle)$9.99, or free with Kindle Unlimited. The paperback's coming soon.
